The Fifth Toy Story Film Trailer Pits The Beloved Duo Versus a Tablet Computer
Exactly 30 anniversary after the first Toy Story film was released, launching Pixar as a leading film company and bringing audiences to iconic figures like Woody (Tom Hanks) and the space ranger (Tim Allen), who are now household names.
In 2026, the next chapter is set to arrive. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 landed this week, providing a glimpse into the plot but leaving viewers wondering how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.
Bonnie's New Toy: A Frog-Shaped Tablet Frightens the Gang
The preview shows Bonnie — who received the toy collection when he grew up — getting a latest plaything, one that alarms Woody, Buzz, and the crew. Bonnie gets her initial digital gadget, and she is thrilled about it.
Presumably, the amphibian-inspired device will animate just like the rest of her playthings. However, the toys seem to view it as a threat intending to supplant them, which it probably is.
The Cowboy's Comeback: Mysteries from Toy Story 4
One thing the trailer doesn't touch on is what Woody is back with his companions in Bonnie's room. The end of Toy Story 4 saw him embark on a fresh journey with the shepherdess (the actress), traveling with a fair and helping giveaway items find good homes.
Certainly, the filmmakers will explain the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the film. Witnessing him appear in Bonnie's room without warning is a little strange, however. It also makes us wonder whether his partner will have come back with him. And what about the stuntman toy (the star)?
Connections from the Previous Film
Fortunately, some aspects are carrying over from the earlier movie. The final act the cowboy did before setting off for his new life was hand over his sheriff badge to the cowgirl (Joan Cusack), entrusting her as the leader of Bonnie's bedroom. In the teaser displays the badge pinned to her outfit.
It is hoped she is still the driving force among the group.
Toy Story 5 debuts on June 19, 2026.
